Arrington named managing director of Renaissance Players
Release Date: 5/12/2004. Expired: 6/12/2004
The Renaissance Players are getting ready to kick off a new season with a new leader.
Formed in 2002, the Renaissance Players is the community theatre troupe operated by the Theatre Department of The Renaissance Center in Dickson. It is comprised of volunteers who are interested in acting, working behind the scenes or being involved in any way with the community theatre program.
Amy Arrington, a member of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company, has been named the new managing director of the Renaissance Players.
A Robertson County native, Arrington has performed in 16 Rep Co. shows, 10 Gaslight Dinner Theatre productions and two community theatre plays in her three years at the center. She also has been the resident costumer for all theatre productions.
“I am very excited about the new challenges of managing the Renaissance Players and want to create opportunities for anyone interested in theatre to be able to participate,” Arrington said. “It’s time we put the community back in community theatre.”
Arrington replaces Kim Leavitt, who left the center to join the staff of the Tennessee Arts Commission.
“Kim implemented several ideas with the Renaissance Players that have been successful. Now, I’d like to build on that foundation,” Arrington said.
To kick off the effort, a meeting of anyone interested in participating in the Renaissance Players 2004-05 season will be held at The Renaissance Center at 7 p.m. Monday, May 24, in the Performance Hall.
“If you’ve ever been on stage, behind the stage, near the stage or even thought about the stage, I want you there,” Arrington said. “It is vital that everyone who has been involved or wants to be involved be there. I have many ideas I want to kick around and get going, but I can’t do it without you. I want this meeting to be a forum, not only for my own agenda, but for anything you, the community, have to say.”
Arrington said many things will be discussed, including setting up an advisory panel, marketing ideas, fund raising and suggestions for next season’s shows.
The Renaissance Players is open to anyone who would like to participate in a community theatre production. Participation can include performing on stage, working as a stagehand behind the scenes, working as part of the technical crew, building sets, making costumes, and locating props or in any other way. There also are opportunities for community members to direct shows.
The Renaissance Players conclude the 2003-04 season in July with a production of The Wizard of Oz. Following that show, ballots will be sent to all participants for the second annual Jimmy Awards, recognizing the achievements of participants in this season. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony at The Renaissance Center.
