Amelia Earhart as portrayed by Amy Arrington

Repertory Theatre Co. presents children’s plays for summer

Release Date: 6/11/2003. Expired: 7/16/2003

The Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company will be presenting two plays for children attending Camp Renaissance this summer and public tickets also will be available for each performance.

The plays, Amelia Lives and King of the Ice Cream Mountain, will be presented on Wednesdays, June 18 and 25 and July 9 and 16, in the Performance Hall of The Renaissance Center in Dickson.

At 9 a.m. on each date the Rep Co. will present Amelia Lives, the story of famed American aviator Amelia Earhart. Rep Co. member Amy Arrington stars as the groundbreaking pilot who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean as well as setting many other standards for women pilots. Earhart’s plane vanished near Australia on July 2, 1937, as she attempted to become the first woman to fly around the world and her fate remains unknown to this day.

The play starts with Earhart at the controls of the plane in her last flight, then goes back and tells her life story from her early childhood in Kansas through her accomplishments as one of the world’s first woman pilots. Amelia Lives was presented to thousands of students on field trips to The Renaissance Center this past spring and is recommended for children in grades 5-12.

King of the Ice Cream Mountain will be presented at 11 a.m. on each of the Wednesday performance dates.

It is the story of an exciting combat between wicked Zeno (who tries to get control of all the ice cream in the world) and King Bumpygruff (ruler of Frozenbrrrrr). Princess Happy and a delightful penguin named Muffles (who is turned into a wild dragon) save the day in J. Mundis’ and E. Leonard’s delightful children’s play. The audience will revel in the fun and excitement of this story about the classic struggle between good and evil. It is recommended for students in grades K-4.

The plays are being presented for the campers attending each weeklong session of Camp Renaissance as part of their experience at The Renaissance Center in addition to the traditional camp activities at the Ruskin Cave adventure campsite.

“We thought since we will be doing the plays for the 100 or so campers each week in a Performance Hall that seats 450, we would also offer tickets for the public for parents and children looking for fun and entertaining activities during the summer break from school,” said Hal Partlow, managing director of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company. “This gives parents a chance to enjoy a live theatre production with their children and also presents another entertainment option for other children’s summer programs in the Middle Tennessee area.”

Tickets for each play are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased at The Renaissance Center, 855 Highway 46 South in Dickson, or by calling (615)740-5570. For more information on the plays or other summer offerings at The Renaissance Center, call (615)740-5600.
