Renaissance Center presents Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior
Release Date: 6/3/2005. Expired: 7/13/2005
Sandwiched among the Saturday morning cartoons of the 1970s and early ‘80s was a series of educational, yet fun, musical vignettes known as Schoolhouse Rock. The Emmy-award winning series taught grammar, mathematics, social studies, science and more through catchy and memorable songs that Baby Boomers can still sing today.
Conjunction Junction, Just a Bill, Zero, My Hero, Interplanet Janet and many more of the old Schoolhouse Rock tunes come to the stage of The Renaissance Center this summer when the Theatre Arts Department presents Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior.
Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior will be presented for children attending Camp Renaissance, for field trips and in two special Lunch Matinees.
Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior will be presented at 9:30 a.m. June 15, 22, 29 and July 13 for Camp Renaissance campers, with public tickets available for $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
Other summer programs, camps, day cares, schools, homeschool groups and organizations can join one of those performances or can schedule a performance of Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior on June 16, 23, 30 and July 14 for a minimum of 25 people. Once a performance is scheduled, public tickets are available for $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior will be presented in The Renaissance Center’s Gaslight Dinner Theatre for two special Lunch Matinees on Saturdays, June 18 and 25. Tickets are $17 per person and include a lunch buffet, drink, dessert and the show.
“Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Junior is a perfect show for families and people of all ages,” said Hal Partlow, managing director of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company and director of the show. “Parents and adults will enjoy the nostalgia of the familiar tunes they listened to on Saturday mornings, while children will find the show and its music entertaining as the Schoolhouse Rock lessons are carried on to a new generation.”
Originally conceived by writer/director Scott Ferguson, Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! was produced by Theatre BAM in Chicago where it opened in 1993 and ran for two years. The show moved to New York City in 1995 and ran for another 250 performances. The Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company presented Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! as part of its curriculum shows in 2000.
“We found that even the younger students knew the Schoolhouse Rock tunes and enjoyed singing along with them during the show,” said Partlow, a member of the cast of that 2000 production. “The show is very fun, upbeat and packed with songs.”
Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher anxious about his first day of teaching, tries to relax by watching television when various character representing facets of his personality emerge from the set. They show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs as Conjunction Junction, Just a Bill, A Noun Is a Person, Place or Thing, Figure Eight, The Preamble, Unpack Your Adjectives, Interjections and many more.
