South Pacific Sails into Performing Arts Theatre

Bloody Mary, Nellie Forbush, Emile de Becque, Lieutenant Joseph Cable, along with sailors, nurses and a chorus will take the stage of the Performing Arts Theatre in South Pacific, The Renaissance Center’s second community theatre production following the sellout crowds of A Christmas Carol.

“South Pacific is a story of romance, lost love and tragedy,” says Leo Sochocki, Director of Drama & Theatre for RCenter. “Having first played in Broadway over 50 years ago, South Pacific was very courageous for its time in that it delved into the disturbing issues of racial intolerance and bigotry. It’s beauty is in the fact that it speaks as clearly to those issues today as it did when it was new.”

On a lighter side, audiences will be treated to such musical scores as ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and ‘I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair.’

Over 60 local residents have been cast in South Pacific which includes an all-female chorus and a children’s chorus.

Cast in the role of the bold and brassy Bloody Mary is Betsy Lampley, a Dickson resident. “I am thrilled to be given this opportunity,” Betsy shared. “My heart is in the arts, particularly in the theatre, and to work with the talented people at The Renaissance Center and learn from them is perhaps the most exciting part for me.”

While on stage, Betsy will sing Ba’li Ha’i, what she refers to as “one of the most beautiful, mysterious songs ever written.” Betsy is currently enrolled in voice lessons at RCenter under the direction of Nina Cathey who will also portray one of South Pacific’s principal characters, Nellie.

Betsy readily admits that being on stage can be rather grueling. She’s been told that it it could take up to two hours in the make-up chair prior to each performance before she can walk on stage as Bloody Mary.

“Bloody Mary is a crass and hard character but one with a lot of heart. Playing her is definitely going to be a challenge for me,” Betsy said.
