Release Date: 3/4/2002. Expired: 5/24/2002

When Sophie Rauschmeyer moves into the apartment next door to Norman Cornell and his roommate, Andy Hobart, it seems only a matter of minutes before Norman falls head over heels in love with his new neighbor despite her repeated spurns. Relentless suitor that he is, Norman finds himself facing a myriad of tirades from Sophie in the rollicking Neil Simon comedy The Star-Spangled Girl Friday evenings in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre at The Renaissance Center March 15-May 24.

Directed by Kim Leavitt, director of Theatre Education for The Renaissance Center, The Star-Spangled Girl focuses on Norman and Andy, two young men struggling earnestly to publish their political magazine from their apartment. But Sophie throws both of them into a romantic tailspin, resulting in a delightful blend of love and politics in this fast-paced, hilarious Simon masterpiece.

“It’s set in 1972. Norman Cornell and Andy Hobart are roommates and they are fresh out of Dartmouth,” Leavitt said. “They are going about their business, trying to launch the publication of their own magazine, when one day Sophie barges into their lives. Norman is completely smitten with her.”

Leavitt says the play is about friendship and love.

“It’s absolutely hysterical,” she said. “People will really enjoy it. The antics Norman pulls in order to woo Sophie are outrageous.”

Leavitt chose The Star-Spangled Girl for a number of reasons. First, she said, Neil Simon’s plays are always popular and people love his work because it’s always funny. Secondly, she said, the play is perfect for the Gaslight Dinner Theatre.

“The Star-Spangled Girl is well suited for the dinner theatre because it’s a small cast in an intimate setting. The audience will feel like they’re sitting in the living room of Norman and Andy’s apartment,” she said.

The Star-Spangled Girl stars Renaissance Rep members Hal Partlow as Andy, Pacer Harp as Norman and Alix McEachern Jones as Sophie.

Don’t miss this evening of great laughs and delicious food at the Gaslight Dinner Theatre.
