Get in the Thick of Things with Public Performance of The Jungle Book

Release Date: 2/1/2001. Expired: 2/17/2001

The Renaissance Center repertory company will present an original adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book in a live performance Saturday Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $8 seniors and $5 for children under 13.

First published in 1893, The Jungle Book is the story of a child, Mowgli, brought up by wolves. With the help of animal mentors, Bagheera, the wise black panther, and Baloo, the sleepy bear, Mowgli soon becomes wise in the ways of the jungle. The Jungle Book is a story of identity and acceptance, as Mowgli struggles to find his place in the jungle, as well as his place among men.

The script has been adapted by The Renaissance Center’s Director of Theatre Education, Kim Leavitt. Leavitt, who teaches Drama and Creative Writing courses at the facility, also penned the Gaslight Dinner Theatre’s first two productions, Bar-B-Q For 2, and Christmas Seasonings.

“The Jungle Book is about connecting,” states Leavitt. “For Mowgli, it’s about self-discovery and discerning where he belongs; in the jungle, the only life he’s ever known – or with humans in the village.”

Jan Dial, Director of Theatre, states, “Having a playwright on staff is a great convenience. The Repertory Company has the unique opportunity of working with Kim in the developmental process so that the end product is truly unique and tailored to each actor’s individual genius.”

While field trip groups can book The Jungle Book Tuesday through Friday by calling Janine Langley, Field Trip Coordinator, at (615)740-5566, everyone will have a chance to see this performance on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall of The Renaissance Center. Ticket prices are $10 adults, $8 seniors and $5 children under 13. Tickets can be purchased at the center or call (615)740-5600 for information.
