Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas kicks off holidays in Gaslight Dinner Theatre
Release Date: 11/5/2002. Expired: 12/21/2002
Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas takes a funny, heartwarming and often poignant look at the struggle to find the spirit of the holidays amid the avalanche of commercialism, stress and chaos that crashes down every December. It is Robert Fulghum’s sequel to All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, which enjoyed a terrific run in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre this summer.
Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas will be presented in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre of The Renaissance Center at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8-Dec. 21. Shows will be on Fridays in November and Fridays and Saturdays in December, however the Saturday shows are already sold out. Three Senior Lunch Theatre presentations also are already sold out. The play is being sponsored by LexaLite International Corporation, makers of molded optical components for the lighting industry.
Tickets are $25, which includes dinner and the show, and reservations are required by noon the day of the show. Seating begins at 6:15 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the show to follow.
The play is an evening of vignettes presented in story-telling format, in the same manner as Kindergarten.
“We had such a good response to All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, I’m sure people will be even more touched by Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas,” said Gaslight Dinner Theatre Managing Director Pacer Harp.
“It is presented in the same style as Kindergarten and, like that show, everyone will be able to identify with one of the characters or situations,” said Director of Theatre Education and Outreach Kim Leavitt, who is directing the play. “It gives us a chance to laugh at the insanity of the whole holiday scene, but also drives home the message of the season.”
Among the many delightful stories is one about a small immigrant child who comes trick-or-treating in a cheap Santa mask a few days before Christmas, inadvertently delivering the true meaning of the season to a grownup with a serious case of “Scroogitis;” hilarious musings about a love/hate relationship with the vibrant poinsettia that arrives in most homes every December and hangs on and on and on, long after the holidays have ended; and a beautiful, deeply moving tribute to the winter solstice, celebrating nature’s precious annual gift of rebirth.
The show stars members of The Renaissance Center’s Repertory Theatre Company: Amy Arrington, Matt Bridges, Krys Collins and Alex Syler.
National Public Radio called the play “A funny, poignant collection of stories, songs and vignettes. If you enjoyed All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, you will enjoy this. And if you are looking for something different to get you into the holiday spirit, and are tired of yet another production of A Christmas Carol, try Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas for pure holiday delight.”
“Laugh-out-loud moments mixed with teary ones, and times when even curmudgeons are caught up in warm reminiscence,” said The Arizona Republic.
Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas is “a delightful vehicle for stirring the Christmas spirit in everyone,” according to The Roanoke Times.
The dinner menu for the show includes roast beef with au jus, turkey and dressing with giblet gravy, green bean casserole, turnip greens, squash, candied yams, cranberry sauce, tossed salad, dinner rolls, apple cobbler, fresh fruit and carrot cake.
