New CyberSphere shows to open at The Renaissance Center

Release Date: 4/23/2002. Expired: 6/30/2002

New summer shows will provide great afternoon and evening entertainment for the entire family in The Renaissance Center’s CyberSphere for May and June.

Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons bring the newest technology in sights and sounds in the 360-degree domed theatre where 14,000 watts of digital sound, 3D graphics, Omniscan Imagineering and DigiStar II join forces to provide the ultimate audio and visual experience.

Beginning May 3, visitors to the CyberSphere can try their hands at navigation when the planetarium program brings The Sky Watchers to the domed theatre at 7 p.m.

In this exciting new show, the late Charles Kuralt (CBS Sunday Morning, On The Road) narrates happenings in the sky throughout the centuries. See the first astronomers discover an ever-growing sky, and watch as current astronomers discover an ever-growing universe. Observe the planets close-up and the night sky re-created in the comfort of the CyberSphere.

The Sky Watchers runs 7 p.m. on Fridays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturdays through June.

Laser Mania brings rock music with spectacular special laser effects at 3 p.m. Saturdays. Music includes Mortal Kombat Theme; Blue by Eiffel 65; Smooth, Santana; Man, I Feel Like a Woman, Shania Twain; That’s the Way It Is, Celine Dion; Desert Rose, Sting; Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters from a Planet Near Mars, Weird Al Yankovic; Mixed Bizness, Beck; Livin’ La Vida Loca, Ricky Martin; and All the Small Things, Blink 182.

At 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, don’t miss Southern Jam, classic rock mixed with state-of-the-art laser graphics. The show features tunes from Molly Hatchet, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Allman Brothers Band, Lynn Anderson, Blackfoot, Eric Clapton, Derek and the Dominos, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Earle, Charlie Daniels Band and a Lynyrd Skynyrd medley.

At 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Laseropolis brings Karn Evil 9 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Head Over Feet - Alanis Morrisette; Rock Lobster - B52s; Firestarter - Prodigy; Under the Milkyway - The Church; Papa New Guinea - First Sound of London; Spiderwebs - No Doubt; Foreplay - Boston; Champagne Supernova - Oasis; End of the World - REM; Torn - Creed; Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana; and One of These Days - Pink Floyd.

“Amazing 3D graphics, Tennessee’s only full dome laser system that can produce more than one trillion colors, and 14,000 watts of digital surround audio make for an incredible adventure,” said Stacey Currens, CyberSphere director.

Planetarium shows are $5 adults, $3 seniors 60 and over and children under 13. Laser shows are $6 all seats. Discounts of 50 cents are available for groups of 25 or more attending a scheduled planetarium show, and a second laser show on the same day is an additional $1 off.
