Children’s Christmas Workshop set for Dec. 1 at TRC
Release Date: 11/8/2001. Expired: 12/1/2001
Children of all ages will work like little elves creating gifts and holiday decorations in the art studios at The Renaissance Center Saturday, Dec. 1, at the third annual Children’s Christmas Workshop. An added bonus, organizers said, is an opportunity for parents to do some Christmas shopping without the children.
Sponsored by Wal-mart, the workshop is 1-4 p.m. and is an afternoon of fun and festivities as the children participate in three hands-on art projects and partake of hot chocolate and cookies.
“This is the third year we’ve done it,” said Bob Kucher, senior director of Visual Arts at The Renaissance Center. “Wal-mart always donates the supplies and the food.”
The Renaissance Center was voted the number one “Kids’ Art Center” by readers of Nashville Parent magazine.
Students are divided into three age groups that rotate through the three activities. They will make felt Christmas stockings, Christmas cards and gift wrap and ceramics.
“There’s always a surprise guest that shows up,” Kucher said. “It’s a fun, holiday-spirited event.”
Kucher said the event gains in popularity every year. He said the workshop not only gets the children involved in fun, educational activities but it also gives the parents three hours in which they can go off and do Christmas shopping without the children.
“Some of the parents stay and rotate through the activities if they have younger children,” he said. “That’s how we started it. We thought it would be nice for the parents to have a certain amount of time where they could drop their children off and be able to go Christmas shopping. They know their kids are having a good time and doing something in the spirit of Christmas.”
At the end of the workshop the children create a colorful banner that will be presented to Wal-mart, along with some photographs of the children working in the workshop, in appreciation for the store’s involvement, Kucher said.
The cost for the workshop is $10 and the registration deadline is Nov. 24. The workshop is limited to 75 children.
